The Rotary Club of South Whidbey recently honored several teachers of the South Whidbey School district with a “Teacher Appreciation Day.”

Club representatives said that the teachers, working within a structure that is constantly looking to increase effectiveness, draw on their own ingenuity, discover unique ways of educating and stimulate students to retain knowledge and enjoy learning.

The Rotary Club of South Whidbey hosts a special “Teacher Appreciation Day” each year to honor outstanding teachers. The teachers are selected by the principals within the school system and are recognized for exceptional work with young people.

The Rotary members were privileged to meet five of these outstanding teachers and hear about their contributions. Acknowledged for their gifts to South Whidbey children were: Charlie Davies, high school special-education teacher and Rachel Kizer, middle school science/English teacher selected by middle and high school principal Rod Merrill; Deborah Davies, a first-grade teacher who recently completed one of the few national certifications, selected by Jamie Boyd, principal of the elementary school; Betsy Hofius, English teacher who teaches multi-grade levels to students on individual education plans, selected by David Phieffer, Bayview School director; and Lana Johnson, a math teacher who teaches an online hybrid class in a computer lab to all grade levels, selected by Scott Mauk, director-teacher at Whidbey Island Academy.
