Seal pupping season has begun, prompting the Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network to remind Whidbey Island beachgoers to give a wide berth to seals and their pups.
There are a number of reasons to steer clear of seals during the birthing season, said Sandra Dubpernell, a principle investigator with the Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
“Human activity will cause the mother of a seal pup to abandon it,” Dubpernell said. “This means no feeding or touching them. We are asking people to just leave them alone. Moving them signs a death warrant for the pup.”
Also, seals carry diseases, parasites and a distemper that is similar to that found in dogs.
And in reverse, humans can pass diseases to the seals, she said.
“It is the beginning of seal pup season. We have had reports of three pups so far on the west side of the island,” she said.
Most seals can be found in the northwest portion of the island, from around Fort Casey to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
“However, seals have been found at Mutiny Bay, as well,” she said.
Residents should report pups to the network by calling 360-678-3765.
