South Whidbey School District has contracted to do a seismic study of the Primary School campus on Maxwelton Road.

It’s the second phase of a district-wide study to determine the earthquake preparedness of the district’s buildings, said Fred McCarthy, school district superintendent.

McCarthy will report on the contract to school board members at their meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Intermediate School, 5380 S. Maxwelton Road.

Seattle consulting engineers ABKJ, which recently completed a seismic study of Langley Middle School, will conduct the $17,500 study.

McCarthy said the study of the 10 buildings on the Primary School campus, including the Primary School, which was completed in 1969, is expected to be completed in a month or so.

ABKJ determined that the cost of retrofitting Langley Middle School’s eight buildings would be about $2.3 million.

The district plans to put together a study and survey of all its buildings before deciding which projects to undertake, McCarthy said.

The district is considering a multi-million-dollar replacement bond issue in February 2010 to upgrade facilities. It would replace the current $19 million in bonds that will be retired in 2010.
