Three people were injured in a series of vehicle accidents in South Whidbey around midday Sunday, according to Island County Fire District 3 officials.

One person was transported by ambulance to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville after two vehicles collided on Bayview Road when one of them crossed the centerline, Deputy Chief Jon Beck said Monday.

He said the collision happened about 10 a.m. Sunday near the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club.

A short time later, another person was transported to the hospital following a three-car rear-end collision on Highway 525 at Coles Road, Beck said.

The mishap involved a pickup truck and two sedans, and the injured person was in the third vehicle, Beck said.

About noon Sunday, a driver and a dog were uninjured when their vehicle spun out near Highway 525 and Double Bluff Road, Beck said.

And another driver was uninjured when a car spun off Fish Road near Scenic Avenue about 1 p.m. Sunday, Beck said.

Besides the vehicle incidents, fire district personnel responded to several medical calls, another sinkhole along Bob Galbreath Road near Zimmerman Road in Clinton, and a large tree blocking the roadway at Fox Spit Road.

The tree, an old-growth cedar about 80 feet tall and with a trunk about six feet in diameter, toppled across the road near the entrance to the Whidbey Shores waterfront neighborhood about 5 p.m. on Sunday, Beck said.

On its way down, the tree wiped out a mailbox on the other side of the road, and put a 3-foot-long gash about two inches deep in the pavement.

By noon Monday, the tree had been dragged to the side of the road by a county road crew.

Beck said neighbors reported that the ancient tree had probably been dead for years.
