A pair of relatively simple marine rescues were needed over the July 4 weekend.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS was called out to several incidents on the water, but was only needed for a response to two. Neither incident had reported injuries, said Chief Rusty Palmer.

“We were very thankful,” he said.

One of the saves was at Freeland Park just off the dock. Some people fell in the water, about 4 1/2 feet to 5 feet deep, and their boat flipped over. Palmer said the district righted the boat and made sure the people got out of Holmes Harbor OK. When the fire district was called to the scene, Palmer was unaware how close it was to shore.

“We didn’t realize it was at the dock,” Palmer said.

A boat with a dead motor and no anchor was also towed to safety off Camano Head.

Since the district’s 32-foot fire and marine response catamaran entered service in late May, it has responded to seven marine calls.
