Call it “Son of Sinkhole.”

Bob Galbreath Road remained closed Monday after the roadway began to crumble early Sunday evening right next to a repaired sinkhole that had closed the road late last October.

At midday Monday, the new hole, this time in the southbound lane, was about a yard wide at the top, and wider as it progressed to a depth of about 15 feet.

Jon Beck, Island County Fire District 3 deputy chief, said Monday the hole was reported early Sunday night near Zimmerman Road.

He said repairs are expected to begin on Tuesday. Meanwhile, drivers were using Surface Road north of the sinkhole as a detour route.

In October, crews worked through a weekend to fill a 10-foot-wide sinkhole in the same area that swallowed the northbound lane of the road.

That gap was caused by the failure of an old 2-foot-wide culvert about 20 feet below the road.

County officials said at the time that the void — caused by water escaping from the pipe and leaching away the sandy layers of earth surrounding the line — could have been growing for weeks, months or years.

The crater was filled with quarry spalls, smaller stone and a cement-style slurry for the last two feet on top. The hole was big enough at the surface that it took about nine yards of the cement mixture to fill.

County officials said at the time that a permanent solution had to await the end of the storm season, because the pipe beneath the roadway was still needed to handle water runoff.
