Candidates for office in Washington’s 2nd Congressional District reported their campaign fund-raising dollars last month to the Federal Election Commission as required by law.

As of June 30, Republican Norma Smith of Clinton has raised $203,675.42. Her challenger for the Republican nomination, Herb Meyer of Friday Harbor, reported raising $121,000.

Incumbent Democrat Rick Larsen, D-Evertt, had $1.75 million as of July 19.

The primary race for the Republican nomination became a two-person contest when State Rep. Kelly Barlean of Langley withdrew his candidacy.

Barlean, a second term Republican state legislator, pulled out of this year’s contest for his party’s nomination citing fund-raising troubles and a lack of support from the National Republican Party.

He described his decision as “difficult but pragmatic.”

“It simply came down to money,” Barlean said. At the end of June, he said, his campaign had grossed about $117,000.

“The campaign has not raised enough money to defeat a well-financed incumbent,” Barlean said. He expressed frustration that the national party will not get involved unless Larsen does poorly in the Sept. 17 primary election.

As for Smith and Meyer, Barlean said he wishes them well. If they get a combined 52 percent of the primary vote, he said, the winner might upset incumbent Rick Larsen.

Smith is a former aide to Congressman Jack Metcalf. Meyer is a businessman and former aide to President Ronald Reagan.

In a news release Smith said she is “confident we will have the resources necessary to win this race.”
