Soccer climbs to best record ever

"The Falcons racked up their fourth shutout win of the season against Lynden Christian, which was unable to muster any offensive consistency during the 80-minute, 3-0 contest Wednesday."

“Before Wednesday’s home game against the Lynden Christian soccer team, the Falcons’ coach let his boys know that the Lyncs are the North Cascades Conference team to beat this season. So they went out and beat them. In fact, the Falcons racked up their fourth shutout win of the season against the unfortunate Lyncs, who were unable to muster any offensive consistency during the 80-minute, 3-0 contest.Confused by constant midfield offensive attacks and repeatedly stuffed by defensemen Giles Hamilton, Aaron McCabe, and Josh Gianni, the Lyncs’ players did not live up to their reputation and the 3-0 record that preceded them into the game. Now, said team coach Mark Helpenstell, the Falcons carry the toughest reputation in the conference.I think we became that last night, he said Thursday.Leading the offense was senior Joseph Supang, who scored a goal in each half. Shifted from striker to midfield to keep him clear of the Lynden Christian defenders, Supang snagged the Falcons’ first goal just four minutes into the game. Unassisted on the score, Supang picked up a bumbled defensive pass, leapt over a diving Lync goalkeeper, then tapped the ball into the net.On his second score — 10 minutes into the second half — Supang sent a shallow-angle zinger past the keeper on a pass from his brother, George. Kevin Brink capped the scoring midway through the second half, putting a header launched off Joseph Supang’s foot into the net. We’ve practiced that a lot, Helpenstell said of the goal. But if a game MVP award had been given out, Helpenstell said he would have handed it to Matt Gutzmer. Working the mid and backfield, Gutzmer — along with Topi Manu, Lane Richards, and R.J. Erickson — shut down the Lyncs’ strikers. In fact, the Lyncs’ top scorer, who Gutzmer shadowed, did not touch the ball for the first 25 minutes of the game.Falcon goalkeeper Mike Johnson was also able to add the shutout to his personal statistics, earning his keep with several second-half saves. After the win, the Falcons moved to 4-1, the team’s best start in 10 years and its best winning percentage. They played undefeated Mt. Baker Friday night and match up against Lakewood Wednesday in a road game.”
