Soap Box Sunday returns to UUCWI
For this annual tradition for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island, five congregants will share a brief rant or rave about an issue of import and relevance at Sunday’s service.
The service is at 10 a.m. and all are welcome.
Children’s classes are not in session July and August, so older children are welcome to attend the service. There will be child care for children 3 and younger.

Langley Methodist welcomes new pastor
The Rev. Mary Boyd will lead her first service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Langley United Methodist Church. All are invited to welcome her and attend the reception following the service.
This is a return to Whidbey Island for Boyd, who was pastor at Coupeville United Methodist Church from 2001 to 2007. Most recently, she was pastor of University Temple United Methodist Church in Seattle.
Boyd graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a bachelor’s degree in religion. She received a doctorate in biblical studies from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia before becoming an ordained Methodist minister in 1991.
Rev. Boyd’s husband Steve is a systems engineer for the Boeing Company in Everett.
The church is located at Third and Anthes streets in Langley. Boyd can be called at 221-4233.
Congregational meeting and potluck
Tomorrow morning at South Whidbey Community Church, Pastor Darrell Wenzek will speak on “Your Faithfulness to God,” based on Joshua, Chapter 23.
A congregational meeting and potluck will immediately follow worship. Visitors and guests are invited and welcome.
There will also be a men’s breakfast at the Deer Lagoon Grange at 8:30 a.m. today; all interested guys are invited. Dave Heinen from Youth Dynamics will be the speaker, and Darrell Coburn is the featured chef.
Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the life of the Patriarchs. These are open classes and everyone is invited.

SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that welcomes everyone and gathers for worship at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

‘Show Me Your Stuff’ at Unity
Rev. Patty Becker will give the talk “Show Me Your Stuff” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.
The exploration of Unity’s core principles leads us to its second statement of belief which declares that each person has within him or her a spark of divinity called the Christ within. Come hear how this realization changes consciousness in such a way as to be transforming.
Heidi Hoelting will provide the music and Chris Nelson will serve as platform assistant.

Christian Science observes communion
On the second Sunday of January and again in July, the Christian Science Church observes communion, during which the six Tenets of The Mother Church are read. This service on “Sacrament” will focus on humility.
“… be clothed with humility,” (I Peter 5).
“What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds. Self-forgetfulness, purity, and affection are constant prayers. Practice not profession, understanding not belief, gain the ear and right hand of omnipotence and they assuredly call down infinite blessings,” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”).
This service explores one’s ability to experience communion with God. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525, just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road. Everyone is welcome.
CMA offers ‘SonSurf’ vacation Bible school
CMA hosts its annual vacation Bible school — Catch the Wave — from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 19-22.
This year, it’s a beach blast, with a surf-themed Bible school called “SonSurf.” Children will sing, watch skits, create crafts and play games. Light snacks will also be offered.
The free event is for children in kindergarten (completed) through the fourth grade. New this year is a fifth-grade volunteer training program.
Also available is a preschool vacation Bible school for kids ages 4-5 on a first-come registered basis.

Parents can also register at a sneak preview bash, a free event, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 18 at the church. The sneak preview will include registration, a rock wall, treats, crafts and fun.

EvenSong is coming next week to UUCWI
On the second Wednesday of each month, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island holds a quiet, contemplative candlelight evening gathering of song, meditation and readings.
This month’s theme is forgiveness. Accompanied by harp music, this time of reflection is a way to enhance one’s personal spiritual practice.
