Langley will get some help from AmeriCorps next month.

Four volunteers from the national service organization have been assigned to South Whidbey agencies, including the city, and will start Sept. 1, Gena Kraha, program director for South Whidbey Commons, told the Langley City Council at its last meeting.

Kraha, who came to Langley two years ago as an AmeriCorps volunteer herself, said three men and a woman will be performing nine months to a year of service in the South End.

One will work part-time for the city at a task yet to be determined.

The others will be assigned to Good Cheer Food Bank in Bayview and the Whidbey Island Arts Council, and to Service, Education and Adventure (SEA), a Freeland nonprofit that organizes marine-education voyages for area teachers and students.

Kraha said of the 120 AmeriCorps volunteers assigned to the state of Washington, four are coming to South Whidbey.

Their salaries and expenses are paid by the national organization.
