Understanding ‘yes’ is Unity topic
Rev. Joanna Gabriel will give the talk “What Part of ‘Yes” Don’t We Understand?” at Unity of Whidbey on Sunday.
Most of us can identify with ways that our fears, doubts and negative beliefs have created kinks in the hose of the divine flow of prosperity which may make it feel illusive, or even nonexistent. Join Gabriel for an exploration of important tools for straightening out those kinks recommended by major teachers of prosperity throughout the Unity and New Thought movements.
Musical accompaniment will be by Tadd CharetteNunn, and the platform assistant will be Donna Vanderheiden.
The service is at 10 a.m. and all are welcome. Unity of Whidbey is located in its new chapel at 5671 Crawford Road in Langley.
See the Unity Web site at www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.
Sermon shares advice from Paul
The Apostle Paul was self-employed and thought to be unmarried by some. What advice can he offer about relationships in our families and workplaces? Pastor Darrell Wenzek speaks tomorrow morning at South Whidbey Community Church on the topic, “Guidelines for the Family and Business,” based on Paul’s letter to the Colossians 3:18-4:1.
Morning worship begins at 10 and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading an inductive study into Paul’s Letter to the Church at Ephesus and Art Angst leading a study into the Gospel of Luke. These are open classes where everyone is invited.
Also Sunday, there will be a soup/salad picnic at Forget Me Not Farms at 5 p.m. Visitors and guests are welcome, and the group will also discuss future building plans for the church.
At 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, there will be a church breakfast at the Deer Lagoon Grange for both men and women. The speaker will be Ed Smyth, professor of educational ministry at Seattle Pacific University’s School of Theology. Everyone, regardless of church affiliation, is invited.
SWCC gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

Christian Science sermon is on the soul
On Sunday, Aug. 15, the Christian Science sermon discusses what soul is and why it is impossible for you to lose or to be separated from this aspect of God and spirit.
“Human thought has adulterated the meaning of the word soul through the hypothesis that soul is both an evil and a good intelligence, resident in matter,” (“Science and Health”).
Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at 5910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road). Everyone is welcome.
Forum shares the latest from WICA
The adult forum at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland on Sunday is “WICA with a Wink.”
Jeanette Eveland, volunteer coordinator and ticket master for Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, will provide an overview briefing on the building program at the center, and give a sneak peak at the exciting theatrical offerings for the coming season. Special emphasis will be placed on the upcoming musical extravaganza, Djangofest, which will be Sept. 22-26.
The forum starts at 9:15 a.m. Sunday; Ted Brookes will present.
Quaker worship practice at UUCWI
Unitarians draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including wisdom from many of the world’s religions.
This Sunday at the service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island, we will be joined by Christine Hall from the Whidbey Island group of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
Quakers believe that each person has the ability to have a direct relationship with the divine. Hall will share how this belief shapes Quaker worship and the congregation will experience how expectant silence can deepen the listening for divine guidance.
There will be childcare but no religious education during August.
The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.
