South Whidbey churches announce topics for Sunday’s services

South Whidbey services are announced for this weekend

‘Life of Love’ is topic of Sunday’s service

Pastor Darrell Wenzek is back and continuing his series from the First Letter of John. Tomorrow’s sermon at South Whidbey Community Church is “The Life of Love”, based on First John 2:3-11.

As Communion is celebrated, Wenzek’s thesis is that love is the essential element that holds Christian communities together.

Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the lives of the Patriarchs. These are open classes and everyone is invited.

Home Bible studies are also offered; check the church website for times and locations.

All SWCC sermons and special adult forum events are recorded and are available at www.whidbeychurch.org.

SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that welcomes everyone and gathers for worship at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

For further information about the church and services, call 221-1220.

Unity theme is ‘Building A Life’

Doug Benecke will give the talk “Building A Life … From Leftovers” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.

Are you a chip off the old block? The apple of your father’s eye? Just like your mother? Are you a self-made person?

Benecke, a speaker and songwriter, will share thoughts about how we consciously continue to build and rebuild lives of spiritual presence and service. He will be assisted by dedicated musical collaborators.

Donna Vanderheiden will be the platform assistant.

All are welcome. The service is at 10 a.m. Sunday at Unity’s church located at 5671 Crawford Road.

Visit Unity of Whidbey’s website at www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.

Advent Taizé prayer services planned

St. Hubert Catholic Church will hold a Taizé prayer service from 7 to 8 p.m. on the remaining Wednesdays of Advent, Dec. 7, 14 and 21.

All are welcome to the church to join in simple chants, scripture, sacred silence, prayer of intercessions and a candle-lighting service.

The church is located at 804 Third St. The parish office may be reached at 221-5383.

Praying over bread and wine in Freeland

“Prayers Over Bread and Wine” will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 8 and 15 at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church.

All are welcome to participate in this Advent program. Evenings will begin with a light supper of soup, salad and bread followed by teaching and discussion led by Rev. William Seth Adams as he helps participants look at the church’s practice of praying over bread and wine from very early times.

Sunday’s prayers will also be considered, with the aim to deepen and enrich one’s engagement in these prayers.

The church is located at 5217 S. Honeymoon Bay Road.

Christian Science has thoughtful exploration

Why do we praise the creator when we seem surrounded by discord? The answer to this question is the focus of the

Dec. 4 service at the Christian Science Church. Readings from the Bible and “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” explore this issue: “Every concept which seems to begin with the brain begins falsely. Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence. Cause does not exist in matter, in mortal mind, or in physical forms … Jesus walked on the waves, fed the multitude, healed the sick, and raised the dead in direct opposition to material laws … His acts were the demonstration of Science, overcoming the false claims of material sense or law,” (“Science and Health”).

Everyone is welcome to this service that thoughtfully explores the basis for scientifically claiming your freedom from the physical limitations that deny your spiritual heritage.

The service is at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525, just north of Bayview and all are welcome.

Rev. Ketcham will speak on ‘Our Calling’

Rev. Kit Ketcham will consider ways humans have been “called” to a life of joy and responsibility at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island.

Have we been willing, able and joyous or hesitant and resistant to recognize and answer our call?

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided. The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.
