Hear a perspective on homelessness
Doris Newkirk, executive director of Whidbey Island Share a Home, will share her perspective on homelessness on Whidbey at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island.
There will also be a special collection to benefit WISH.
All are welcome. There will be child care for children 3 and younger, but no religious education for older children.
The service is at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation meets at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland.

Communion service at SWCC on Sunday
Tomorrow morning there will be a “Plymouth Brethren-style Communion service” at South Whidbey Community Church, and Pastor Darrell Wenzek will deliver the sermon.
Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the life of the Patriarchs. These are open classes and everyone is invited.
Also, there will be a men’s breakfast 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Deer Lagoon Grange, where Steve Hochenedel will be the featured chef. All interested guys are cordially invited.
Home Bible studies are also offered; check the church website for times and locations.

‘Go (trans) Figure’ at Unity’s Sunday service
Doug Benecke will give the talk “Go (trans) Figure” at the next Unity of Whidbey service.
Sunday, Aug. 7 follows a significant, but slightly obscure, Holy Day on the Christian Calendar, The Feast of the Transfiguration. Reconnecting with this ancient tradition — in a modern way — can provide a window into the sacred in each of our hearts, perhaps the only “place” in which the Sacred truly lives. What does it mean to be transfigured? What can we know, and what can we only intuit, or have revealed to us, about such a state?
Benecke, a songwriter, will be joined by very special musical guests.
Joy Williams will serve as platform assistant.

Sermon considers creation of spirit
At the next Christian Science service, come consider spirit’s creation, free from the limitations of material flesh (or “matter”) and to answer these questions: “Can Deity be known through the material senses? Can the material senses, which receive no direct evidence of spirit, give correct testimony as to spiritual life, truth, and love?” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”).
The negative answer to these questions explains Jesus’ healings and how we can live free from fear and disease today.
“Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them,” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”).

On the second Wednesday of each month, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island holds a contemplative candlelight evening service of readings, song and meditation accompanied by harp.
The next Wednesday evening service is 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10. All are welcome.
