‘Resisting the Devil’ at First Baptist Church

The text for this Sunday’s sermon at the First Baptist Church of South Whidbey is James 4:7. The title of the sermon is “Resisting The Devil.”

‘Learning to be Astonished’ at UUCWI

Glistening snow-capped peaks, radiant sunsets, morning light slanting through mighty trees — we live in a beautiful place. There is also beauty under our feet.

At the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island on

Feb. 20, guest speaker Larry Daloz will share some of the wonder to be found on a miniature scale on the forest floor.

Daloz is a senior fellow at the Whidbey Institute and is a Quaker.

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

Joshua series starts this Sunday at SWCC

Sunday’s sermon at South Whidbey Community Church will begin a series based on the Old Testament book of Joshua. Pastor Darrell Wenzek will preach from Joshua, Chapter 1, on the topic, “Has Your Battle Cry Changed? Do you still have a winning attitude in life?”

Also at the Deer Lagoon Grange there will be a men’s breakfast, featuring the savory talents of chef Steve Hochenedel. The time is 8:30 a.m. and all men are cordially invited.

Sunday worship at SWCC is from 10 to 11 a.m., and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading a study in the book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the book of Genesis: the life of Abraham. These are open classes and everyone is invited. Home Bible studies are also offered; check the church website for times and locations.

Hear about films that make you feel good

Join guest speaker Jim Freeman, with music by Heidi Hoelting, for an hour of uplifting fellowship as they offer, “The Healing Side of Cinema,” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.

In honor of the upcoming Academy Awards on Feb. 27, Freeman will discuss the joys of cinema as we re-enjoy the films that help us feel better.

Sam Glass will be the platform assistant. A Course in Miracles group meets 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Swami speaks at Trinity Lutheran

The third in a series of interfaith studies at Trinity Lutheran Church will feature speaker Swami Brahmatmananda discussing the Hindu faith.

The next session is 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 20 in the church’s Fireside Room in Freeman.

Brahmatmananda serves at Vedanta Center in Seattle under spiritual leader Swami Bhaskarananda and at the Tapovan Retreat Center in Arlington. In 2010, he took the final vows of Sannyas when he received his name.

He has been active for many years in the Interfaith Council of Washington (now known as Interfaith Network of Washington), and is currently serving as secretary and past president.

Christian Science service is on ‘Mind’

If you’ve tried to exert human willpower to change your life, you might well have met with failure. If one turns to the Divine Mind as the source of all intelligence, then human willpower, with it conflict and struggle, can be sloughed away.

“The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind,” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”).

On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Christian Science service will be on “Mind.” All are welcome to this thoughtful and healing service beginning at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road).

Special gospel services in Clinton

Special gospel services will be held at Clinton Community Hall on Sundays through

March 13. Services start at 11 a.m.

These Bible-based services are in a preaching format and last one hour. There will be no collections taken. All are welcome.
