Speaker explains ‘The Heart of Islam’
Jamal Rahman will be the speaker at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island this Sunday.
Rahman’s passion lies in interfaith community building. The cofounder and co-minister at Interfaith Community Church in Seattle and also adjunct faculty at Seattle University, he remains rooted in his Islamic tradition yet cultivates a “spaciousness” by being open to the beauty and wisdom of other faiths.
Rahman travels often, teaching classes, workshops and retreats locally, nationally and internationally.
He is the author of “The Fragrance of Faith: The Enlightened Heart of Islam,” and a coauthor of two new books: “Out of Darkness, Into Light: Spiritual Guidance in the Quran with Reflections from Jewish and Christian Sources,” and “Getting to the Heart of Interfaith: The Eye-Opening, Hope-Filled Friendship of a Pastor a Rabbi, and a Sheikh.”
The service is at 10 a.m. and all are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

All in the family is the topic at SWCC
It’s all in the family: What traits do you share with your ancestors?
Pastor Darrell Wenzek will speak Sunday morning at South Whidbey Community Church on the topic, “It Runs in the Family,” based on Joshua, Chapter 15.
Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9, with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the life of the Patriarchs. These are open classes and everyone is invited.
SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that welcomes everyone and gathers for worship at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

Sermon centers on the Lord’s Prayer
“Our Master taught his disciples one brief prayer, which we name after him the Lord’s Prayer,” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”).
On Sunday, June 5, the Christian Science service will focus on this vital Lord’s Prayer, with readings from the Bible and “Science and Health,” to consider “God the Only Cause and Creator.”
All are welcome to join in this service to honor God through learning more about the prayer Jesus taught and that “…covers all human needs,” (“Science and Health”).

Choristers to sing EvenSong in Freeland
EvenSong is a contemplative service which since medieval time, has been held at day’s end.
The Choristers of St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods, under director Marion Anderson, and the Choristers of Epiphany Episcopal Seattle, guided by director Carol Foster, will join their young voices for this most Anglican of all Christian worship services at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at St. Augustine’s in Freeland.
During the last century, EvenSong as a service has emerged as a liturgy of rare and mystical beauty in which the word is illuminated by music. The Choristers are young singers, spanning the ages from third grade up, who rehearse weekly and sing once a month.
This EvenSong is the kick-off of two weeks of celebration surrounding the dedication of the new buildings at St. Augustine’s. The public is welcome.
Unity service recalls qualities of childhood
Doug Benecke will give the talk “Childhood & Memory” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.
As summer beckons, it is natural to slip into a reverie concerning lazy, long days of school vacation, barefoot backyard adventures and picnics with watermelon. Qualities of childhood, of innocence, of life in the moment call to us at any age. It is little wonder that Jesus urged us to “become like little children.” Benecke will share reflections on childhood, memory and antidotes to the dizzying whirl of our adult tasks, with special musical guests.
Sam Glass will serve as platform assistant. The service is 10 a.m. Sunday at Unity’s church at 5671 Crawford Road. All are welcome.

EvenSong returns to UUCWI in Freeland
On the second Wednesday of each month, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island holds a quiet, contemplative candlelight evening gathering of song, meditation and readings.
This month’s theme is “Poetry as Spiritual Practice.”
Accompanied by harp music, this time of reflection is a way to enhance one’s personal spiritual practice.
