Sydney Ackerman took her oath of office as the first student representative for the South Whidbey School District Board of Directors on Wednesday.

Ackerman, a South Whidbey High School senior, said she liked being on the board during the Sept. 25 meeting.

“It’s a new level of looking at the way school works,” she said. “There’s so much more to everything. It’s given me a broader perspective.”

Superintendent Jo Moccia said Ackerman has a lot to offer the board.

In addition to being a student representative, Ackerman serves as the executive treasurer for the high school’s Associated Student Body and is a member of Knowledge Bowl, Honor Society, Poetry Club, Shake the Dust team and the new Debate Club at the school.

Ackerman wants students to consider her as a liaison to the board. She said she wants students to come to her with their concerns so she can relay that information to the board.

Ackerman said she wanted to provide a different perspective for the board and to represent “the best school ever.”
