South Whidbey Parks District continues real estate talks

South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District commissioners will hold a special meeting this week to discuss the acquisition of property for a campground.

South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District commissioners will hold a special meeting this week to discuss the acquisition of property for a campground.

The meeting is 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the district’s headquarters.

While the meeting is public, the board will immediately retire behind closed doors to discuss the issue in executive session, according to Doug Coutts, district director. The purchase of property is one of the few things commissioners can discuss in secret.

Coutts said the district is trying to “expedite” the situation and be as “responsive as possible” in negotiations.

The possibility of purchasing 30 acres of land adjacent to Community Park was first proposed in the district’s regular meeting on July 15.

“The talks were [paused] working on getting a review appraisal secured,” Coutts said in an email Wednesday.

The board will be discussing a potential counter-offer and any conditions on the counter-offer, he said. The district’s realtors will also be present in the closed meeting to serve as experts assisting the board.
