Students on South Whidbey may have a host of new netbooks and tablets this fall.

The South Whidbey School District will look at approving a purchase order for 210 iPads and 175 Google Chromebooks for district students.

Chromebooks will replace the standard PC towers in the schools’ computer labs and classrooms. The first round of purchases will go to one computer lab at each school, fourth-grade and fifth-grade classrooms and the math classroom at South Whidbey Academy.

The total cost for the netbooks, with 16 gigabyte solid-state drives and 11.6-inch screens and the management consoles, is $51,935.23. Acer Chromebooks, the version South Whidbey schools will use, retail for about $200 from Google.

The black, 16 gigabyte iPad tablets will be used for the seventh grade at Langley Middle School, special education and South Whidbey Elementary School as a mobile lab. South Whidbey was quoted $109,341.33 for the Apple tablets, about $4,400 under retail cost.

Funds for the new gear will come from the district’s capital/technology levy, which was nearly doubled with a voter-approved lid lift in February.

The school board will review the request at its 5:30 p.m. meeting Wednesday, Aug. 28.
