South Whidbey skateboarders and freestyle bicyclists are inching closer to having their first skatepark.

A second design by California-based skate park architects Purkis-Rose, RSI submitted to South Whidbey Community Parks and Recreation District should yield up a park that is both what skaters want and what donors giving money towards its construction can afford.

“A number of skaters are going over the plan now, and so far the comments have been very favorable,” said Parks Director Suzette Hart at Wednesday’s district board meeting.

The district requested a second design because the original was at least $35,000 over budget.

“We did not receive a budget with this second plan, so I am not going to assume that it is less than the original,” Hart said. “Once I meet with the teens, getting the dollar amount from the architects is the next step.”

The proposed facility, to be located in South Whidbey Community Park on Maxwelton Road, is a collaboration between the parks district and the South Whidbey Rotary Club. To date, Rotary has raised $100,000 in donations to add to the $50,000 state grant awarded to the parks district.

The first set of plans drawn by Purkiss-Rose estimated construction costs for the 10,000 square-foot skate and bike recreation site to be $170,000.
