Three faculty members and three volunteers were acknowledged by the South Whidbey School District’s three Parent Teacher Student Associations (PTSA) recently.
The Golden Apple award is presented to teachers and faculty who excelled with students, and the Golden Acorn is for volunteers.
South Whidbey High School’s Golden Apple went to teacher Karyle Kramer, and the Golden Acorn was given to Clyde Monma, a math tutor.
The South Whidbey High School PTSA Facebook page posted the news in late May and praised both recipients: “You are both so deserving and we thank you so very much for all your great energy and support of this community! Please take a minute to congratulate them when you see them next!”
At Langley Middle School, the Golden Acorn went to Whidbey Watershed Stewards Education Coordinator Lori O’Brien, who runs the Maxwelton Outdoor Classroom.
“Lori has helped raise and educate this whole school district,” said LMS PTSA President Shawn Nowlin in an email. “When we gave her the Golden Acorn Award, she was telling me about seeing the high school seniors and realizing that she has taught them from preschool at Trinity (Lutheran Church) all the way through to school graduation.”
The middle school Golden Apple was given to counselor Janet Hunter.
“Janet works really hard to support the kids who really need an adult who can understand their personal issues,” Nowlin said. “Middle school is so important for kids to have just one sympathetic ear. On top of the counseling, she also oversees the ASB (Associated Student Body) kids so she helps them develop their own leadership style.”
South Whidbey Elementary School’s PTSA issued the Golden Orca — named for the school’s mascot — to teacher Betsy Hofius, assistant secretary Vivian Stembridge and Cary Peterson, who established the school’s garden in partnership with Good Cheer Food Bank.
