South Whidbey’s annual Youth in Arts celebration continues this week with displays of student art work at post offices the Star Store, Back of the Dog, Langley library and local businesses, while free evening performances will take place at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts and other venues.
Island Strings students and staff will perform today at 7 p.m. The show will include the Pre-Twinkle class, Twinkle class and Orchestra Prep class with staff Kat Fritz, Linda Good and Susan Blanton. Ward Beebe, a Suzuki teacher who teaches in Oak Harbor, LaConner and Anacortes, will participate with some of his students. Sydney Agate, a student at the Whidbey Island Waldorf School, will be featured as a soloist on violin, and Kelly Pilkington will lead the South Whidbey Youth Symphony.
Island Strings will also sell cookies, T-shirts and raffle tickets for the Gate made by Leonard Good, to benefit the IAC Music Scholarship fund.
On May 9 at 7:30 p.m., South Whidbey Intermediate School students will perform a baseball musical called “Inside Pitch” in the intermediate school gym.
On May 10, Whidbey Children’s Theatre, Whidbey Dance and the piano students of Maureen Rorex and Marsha Engel will offer a Potpourri of performances starting at 7 p.m. at WICA.
The World’s Shortest Parade will take place May 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m. and marching down First Street. Youth of all ages are encouraged to participate, joining singers, a unicyclist, fencers (possibly) and musicians.
Youth in Arts week will culminate with performances at WICA following the parade and ending at about 2 p.m. There will be acts from the Primary School, Intermediate School songs from its musical and a Whidbey Children’s Theater Disney Revue.
All performances are free, with donations taken to help pay for lights and sound.
