Well, this guy certainly lives up to his name.

Leonard Good received the first Heart of Gold award presented by Island Angel Chocolates of Langley.

The Heart of Gold contest required applicants to write a 250-word essay about someone they know who possesses a “heart of gold.” Good’s wife, Linda, nominated her husband for the award, which honors a person who is generous, kind and loving.

In her essay, Linda Good forgives her husband certain qualities while praising his large heart.

“My husband, of nearly 48 years, Leonard Jacob Good, truly has a Heart of Gold,” she wrote.

“Even though he has gained weight, his hair has receded and is now white, he still has a Heart of Gold. Considering that at the age of 71 he’s lost some of his hearing and he snores at night, he still has a Heart of Gold … I’ve shared so many memories with him over the years, and as we move into our final decades, I’m so grateful I married a generous, loving man with a Heart of Gold.”

The Goods were met at Celtic Viking Jewelry in Langley to receive a heart-shaped gold necklace handcrafted by master goldsmith and shop owner Bret Christiensen.

Good also received a bevy of other goodies from local area merchants including Whidbey Island Soap, Prima Bistro, The Clyde Theatre, Second Street Winery, Joe’s Island Music, the Langley Chamber of Commerce and Island Angel Chocolates.

Leonard Good teaches science and photography at Whidbey Island schools. The couple lives in Langley where they keep a hive of bees, worm bins, chickens and a cat. Good enjoys model airplanes and boats, and is somewhat famous on the South End for his rocket-building classes, which he teaches every summer through South Whidbey Parks & Recreation.

A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6 in conjunction with the Langley Art Walk to honor Good and the other nominees. The essays will be displayed during the reception.
