Golfing the best she can be, South Whidbey High School golfer Jennifer Pan headlined a big week on the links for the school’s boys and girls teams.
Pan, a senior, shot a 41 to score 31 Stableford points on nine holes Thursday afternoon at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club to lead the Falcon girls to a 106-66-30 North Cascades Conference victory over Blaine and Lakewood. Far and away the top golfer on her squad on the day, Pan was the medalist on the course, out pointing her teammates and closest rivals, seniors Hailie Mansfield and Jessica Johnson, by 11 points.
Overall, the day was perhaps the team’s best ever, as Pan, Mansfield, Johnson and the team’s other scorers, Jenna Lindus and Nici Eaton, tallied 106 points. That beats the team’s best performance last year, a 103-point NCC match anchored by graduate and former state competitor Adrienne Hawley.
Tom Sage, the team’s coach, said drying conditions on the course helped the girls as they hit their benchmark score four days after coming back from spring break.
Elsewhere this week, the Falcon boys had a solid return from spring break. On Monday, the team took on the best golf teams in Island and Snohomish counties at the 20-team Dolan Invitational at the Everett Golf and Country Club. Widely considered one of the most competitive matches prior to the state meet, the Dolan gave Falcon senior Jeff Strong a chance to shine. Stroking a 78 on 18 holes, Strong was a top-10 finisher in the meet, outpacing senior teammate Reed Dettrich, who finished the day with an 83. Other scorers for the Falcons were junior Drew Aernie with a 92, and junior Kenny Johnson with a 99. Johnson started his match with a 43 on the first nine, before stretching the back nine out to 56 strokes.
On Thursday, the boys traveled to Kayak Point Golf Course in Stanwood. With Aernie leading the team with an 82, the Falcons tallied a team total of 450 to defeat Blaine by one stroke. Lakewood was the winner with a 426.By MATT JOHNSON
