One game away from clinching a conference title, the Falcon fastpitch team saw almost no resistance during the past week of play.

Even with junior Lucy Dauman — South Whidbey’s least-used starting pitcher — on the mound Wednesday, the Falcon girls strolled by the Sultan Turks 15-0 in a four-inning road game on a combination of walks, hits and near-perfect pitching.

The win, which Falcon Coach Todd Lubach seemed embarrassed to talk about, was the Falcons’ 17th of the year and takes the team to a 12-0 North Cascade Conference record. It also puts South Whidbey in control of first place, after second-place Mount Baker lost its second game of the season this week. One more win against the Mountaineers — which was the plan for a home game yesterday — puts a lock on the championship for the Falcons.

Any game against Mount Baker is bound to be more straightforward than Wednesday’s win at Sultan. After doing some serious hitting and base running Monday in an 8-2 home win over Nooksack Valley, the Falcons hardly had a chance to hit the ball against poor Turk pitching.

Behind Dauman’s 2-hit, three-strikeout and scoreless pitching performance, the Falcons needed only five hits of their own and a lot of bases on balls to amass 15 runs and to convince the game’s umpire to call the game after just four innings.

The contest was almost as uneventful as a 14-team tournament last Saturday in Blaine. Hoping to meet a team that could put up some resistance, South Whidbey wound up with a two-game cakewalk that Lubach called “a waste of time.” The Falcons pounded a team from Foster High School 25-0 in a four-inning opener behind freshman Christie Robinson’s one-hit, eight strikeout pitching.

In the day’s second game, against Chief Sealth, the girls won 10-0. Hitting highlights in that game included Val Mock’s 2-for-3 stint at the plate — which included a triple — and Carolann Lubach’s one-run, two-RBI day. Ashley Lopez started the game on the mound and pitched 10 strikeouts before Lucy Dauman finished things in the sixth.

The highlight of the day, Coach Lubach said, came in the tournament’s base running competition. Sophomore Bronwyn Russell won the event by sprinting around the bases in just 11.98 seconds.

Lubach said he was impressed.

“That is amazing,” he said.

The Falcons play their final game of the regular season May 10 at home against Lynden Christian.
