The South Whidbey School District is ready to listen. District Superintendent Jo Moccia will begin the first of three “Community Conversations” on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

The conversations are a chance to offer input on the district’s programs, budget and future. The school district began crafting its 2012-2013 school year budget in February, and school officials said they are expecting 70 fewer students to enroll next year. Officials estimate the lost revenue due to fewer students to total almost $1 million.

Earlier, the district expected to close Langley Middle School and consolidate schools on Maxwelton Road. The school board rescinded that resolution in December.

However, the question of shrinking class size and unused facilities remains a concern.

All three meetings will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 107 at South Whidbey High School. The gatherings are open to the entire South Whidbey community, as well as parents, students and school staff.

The other two community meetings are scheduled for March 21 and April 18.
