The streets of Langley are about to get a lot more colorful.

Elementary school teacher Jeana Dominguez approached the city council this week with a proposal to create murals surrounding six storm drains in Langley.

The storm drains are located on First and Second streets and are distanced away from fire hydrants and parking spaces.

Dominguez said she got the idea from her students, who have been studying the Maxwelton Watershed.

They suggested a way to raise awareness about stormwater pollution in the form of the street art.

The student-led project would collaborate with local artists to ensure the murals are “really pleasing, aesthetically,” Dominguez said. City council members will be able to vote on which designs they like best.

The city council was greatly receptive to the idea.

“It’s pretty imaginative, actually,” Councilmember Peter Morton said.

Councilmember Dominique Emerson said she saw the project as a way to connect “upper Langley,” with its brand-new community murals, to “lower Langley.” Earlier in the meeting, the council had been discussing how to extend the city’s creative district into the downtown core.
