A Greenbank girl injured in a rollover car accident on Smugglers Cove Road on Jan. 24 will have to answer to several driving charges in Island County District Court.

Jessica Petry, 17, was seriously injured in the accident, which happened after she tried to pass another car on a curve at about 65 mph. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was ejected from her car. The car rolled on top of her.

This week, Petry was charged with negligent driving in the second degree and was cited for not wearing a safety belt.

Petry’s brother was also injured in the crash. He helped his sister by using a piece of wood to rock the car off her body. According to a report written by the deputy who assisted at the crash, Darren Crownover, a passing motorist also helped hold the car up. Crownover pulled the girl from under the car upon his arrival.

Petry was transported to Harborview Medical Center after the crash, where she was treated for a broken jaw, pelvis and leg.

The posted speed limit for the area where the accident took place is 50 mph.
