Three people were seriously injured Sunday night when a man drove the wrong way on Highway 525 on South Whidbey and struck an oncoming car head on, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The State Patrol memo indicates that drugs and alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and that the cause is under investigation.

Clinton resident Federico Sajvin Lopez, 24, drove a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup north in the southbound lanes of the highway, the state patrol reported. Near the intersection with Cedar Vista Drive, his truck struck a southbound 2005 Mini Cooper driven by a 17-year-old resident of Lake Forest Park, Washington.

Sajvin Lopez was seriously injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit Monday afternoon. The State Patrol report indicates that charges against him may be pending.

The 17-year-old girl who was driving the Mini Cooper was also seriously injured and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. The passenger, a 15-year-old resident of Lake Forest Park, was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett.

Media is unable to check on the status of the two girls because the State Patrol does not release names of minors.

The accident was reported at 8:06 p.m. The section of the highway was closed to traffic until 12:09 a.m., according to the State Patrol. The location of the accident was near the Clinton ferry terminal.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.
