A Seattle man in his 50s was booked into Island County jail after a tire-slashing spree in Freeland last week, officials said.

Island County Undersheriff Kelly Mauck said Monday that the string of activity began at the Freeland Café about 2 p.m. Friday.

Officials received a 911 call that a man was being disorderly at the downtown eatery. Mauck said the man apparently left on foot before deputies arrived, leaving behind a briefcase, cellphone and other personal items.

A short time later a call was received that the man was acting belligerently and looking for a fight while walking along Main Street in Freeland. Deputies questioned him, then apparently released him, Mauck said.

A little later, about 3:30 p.m. back at the cafe, patrons called 911 to report that tires had been slashed on six vehicles in the parking lot.

Responding to another report of a possible assault, deputies again searched for the man and found him walking along Goss Lake Road a short time later, Mauck said.

He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree malicious mischief.
