Washington State Transportation Commission proposed fare increases to ensure the state meets the revenue target set by the state Legislature in the upcoming biennium budget.

Public comment is being accepted in the coming weeks, including a meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at the Island County Commissioners Hearing Room in Coupeville.

Comments may also be submitted by email to transc@wstc.wa.gov, by phone at 360-705-7070 or in writing to WSTC Fare Proposal, P.O. Box 47308, Olympia, WA 98504-7308.

Across the board, passenger fares would increase 2 percent and 3 percent for vehicles. There would be an additional 2 percent increase on passenger fares and 2.5 percent on vehicle fares on May 1, 2014. Youth passes would be 50 percent off the full fare.

All proposed changes, if approved, would become effective Oct. 1.
