A near collision on Highway 525 this week left a motorcyclist injured and state police looking for the driver of the other vehicle.

Described as a greenish or teal van or mini van, the vehicle was last seen heading north on Houston Road with two occupants, a driver and passenger wearing a red shirt, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Anyone with information about the accident or the occupant’s whereabouts are asked to call 360-654-1204 and leave a message for Detective Craig Cardinal.

According to a department press memo, the accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. Leonard Shaw, 52, of Surrey, British Columbia, was northbound on the state route riding a 2007 Harley Davidson. As he approached the intersection of Houston Road, the southbound van made a left turn onto Houston and crossed into Shaw’s path of travel.

“The two vehicles missed one another, but the motorcycle went down,” Cardinal said.

Shaw was transported to Whidbey General Hospital with fractures to his left foot and several ribs, according to Cardinal.

Witnesses reported that the van did pull over following the near miss, but may not have been able to see Shaw in the roadway from where they stopped. Heavy brush on the corner may have blocked their view.

“They may be unaware a collision even happened,” Cardinal said.

Nevertheless, they are being sought for questioning and Cardinal is asking them, or anyone who with knowledge about the collision, to come forward.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that Shaw was treated and released.
