Unwanted drugs can be disposed of in Freeland on Saturday as part of National Drug Take-Back Day.

Controlled, non-controlled and over-the-counter drugs can be turned into the Island County Sheriff’s Office Freeland precinct from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30. The precinct is at 5521 E. Harbor Road, across from the Freeland Post Office.

All solid-dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in original containers with secure caps also will be accepted.

Not accepted will be intravenous solutions, injectables, syringes or medical waste, due to the potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.

Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine also won’t be accepted, officials said.

The drug drive is to prevent unwanted pharmaceuticals from being flushed down the drain, endangering water resources, they said.

Drugs will also be collected during the same hours at Coupeville Marshall’s Office and the Oak Harbor Police Department.

Last fall, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds — 121 tons — of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners.
