At least one person was injured in a two-car head-on collision on snow-covered Highway 525 north of Freeland Tuesday morning, emergency officials said.

Island County Fire District 3 Deputy Chief Mike Cotton said the collision occurred along a sloped section of the highway between Island Recycling and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island meeting hall about 10 a.m. as snow continued to fall on the South End.

Cotton said at least one man was transported to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville with undetermined injuries. Cotton said details of the accident, which involved two cars with single occupants, were unavailable.

Traffic in the area was restricted for about an hour while emergency workers attended to the mishap, Cotton said. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, he said.

It was the latest and most serious of several incidents caused by the snow, Cotton said. Several cars went of other South End roadways as an inch of snow and slush covered surfaces and created slippery conditions, but no other injuries were reported.

“The roads are covered with about an inch of snow,” Cotton said. “They’re very wet and very slushy, and very slippery underneath.”

Snow showers are forecast for Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service office in Seattle.

More snow is expected on South Whidbey on Wednesday, with 1 to 3 inches possible. Snow is expected to continue overnight Wednesday, with another 1 to 2 inches possible.

Forecasters also said snow showers were likely on Thursday, with less than a half inch possible.

Sunny weather is expected Friday, with a high near 32.
