Three agencies were involved in the rescue of two people from a sinking sailboat off North Whidbey Thursday evening.

North Whidbey Fire and Rescue and Oak Harbor Fire responded to a report of a sinking boat near the Navy pier at the Seaplane Base around 8:15 p.m. Within a half hour, Navy Search and Rescue launched a helicopter.

There were no injuries, and the stranded sailors declined medical care.

Over the radio, the Coast Guard contacted the two men in the sinking 20-foot sailboat.

It took about an hour before Search and Rescue touched down on the beach next to the capsized sailboat, which was grounded on its side east end of Polnell Point, about a mile from where the initial report stated. Search and Rescue lifted both sailors from the boat.

The water and weather did not make for any obstacles.

Chief Christopher Swiger said he is unsure where the boat went after the rescue; it is likely still grounded near the beach.

“NWFR would like to thank all partners for this great outcome,” he wrote in a press release.
