Amid the chaos of the Boston Marathon bombing Monday, a Clinton man’s family is thankful he’s fast.
Kurt Warwick, 24, was well finished with the race when the bombings occurred. Warwick finished the marathon in 2:33:50, almost five minutes faster than his previous best time from last year’s race.
Warwick was on the subway when the bombs went off near the finish line. He did not realize what happened until later when he was eating lunch with his mother, Sharon Warwick. The Clinton residents returned home later that day.
“It was surreal,” she said in an email.
Kurt Warwick’s time placed him 106th overall and 89th among male competitors.
Another South Whidbey resident also finished the marathon before the bombs exploded, killing three and injuring more than 175. Paul Koelblinger, a 55-year-old Freeland man, finished the race in 3:48:10.
Start times were between 10:10 and 10:40 a.m. for both Koelblinger and Warwick. That put their finishing times around 12:30 p.m. for Warwick and just prior to the 2:50 explosions for Koelblinger.
Phone calls to Koelblinger’s home were not immediately returned.
On Tuesday, investigators revealed they believed shrapnel studded pressure cookers, hidden in backpacks were used as bombs. Invesitagators did not know whether the attack was domestic or foreign.
