Two nights, two teams, two completely different matches.

After taking a long, slow and losing pounding in an opener against a big-school team Tuesday, the Falcon girls volleyball team showed they have the stuff to snap back and win just one night later.

Starting a new season with a new scoring system, the Falcons played close with 3A Edmonds-Woodway in a road game Tuesday night, losing 3-1 in 25-point games that didn’t have them losing by more than 10 at any point. But then, to open their home season the next night, the Falcons came close to shutting out Kings, winning 3-1 to even their record at 1-1.

Shaking off the 15-25, 19-25, 25-23, and 22-25 loss the night before, the Falcon girls came out hammering at Erikson Gymnasium Wednesday. To open, they shocked Kings in the first two games of the night, winning 25-13 and 25-12 before a big home crowd. Led by Liz Norris and Katy McGillen — who combined for 21 kills on the night — South Whidbey won a lot of points at the net. Senior setter Brianna Hussey, who would go on to a two-night total of 56 assists, kept her hitters will supplied, as did Amy Brown, whose 13 digs against Kings totalled two more than the night before.

In the night’s third game, the Falcons seemed to literally fall down. After Kings evened the game at 12-12, South Whidbey’s girls simply failed to dig a number of well-placed Kings hits. The Falcons went on to lose the game before coming back for a 25-17 victory in the fourth to win the match.

Falcon coach Tim Durbin said his girls adjusted well to a new scoring system for the games. Called rally scoring, the system requires a team to reach 25 points and be ahead by two to win. Until this year, the winning standard was 15 points with a two-point margin.
