Washington, Whidbey boating season to launch May 7

It’s nearly boating season, and the Island County Sheriff’s Office is reminding Whidbey Island mariners to take extra care on the water. The department’s marine unit has set a goal to prevent any loss of life on the water this year, and thus will be making its presence known once the season officially kicks off on May 7.

The unit will conduct vessel checks at boat launches and on the water, checking for state required Boater Education Cards for anyone 61 and younger.

Officers will also inspect for mandatory safety equipment, such as life jackets and signal devices required by the U.S. Coast Guard. Visit www.islandcountywa.gov/Sheriff/Documents/WA-REQUIRED-EQUIPMENT-07.pdf for a full list of required gear.

The sheriff’s office reminds boaters that the weather can change suddenly and dramatically, and that captains should check forecasts before leaving the dock. It’s also good practice to let someone else know your plans, including where you’re headed and your estimated time of return, according to deputy Chris Garden, training and marine unit supervisor for the sheriff’s office.

For questions, email Garden at the Island County Sheriff’s Office at chrisg@co.island.wa.us or call 360-678- 7877.
