Despite strong winds and flickering lights, South Whidbey escaped this weekend’s blustery weather with little incident, authorities reported.
“We dodged another bullet with the windstorm,” said Chief Rusty Palmer of South Whidbey Fire/EMS.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday all saw heavy winds and lots of rain. Gusts recorded at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island hit 59 mph on Sunday, according to data provided by the National Weather Service.
The breezy weekend followed a wind watch that was issued for Thursday; the fire department, however, reported responding to few calls that day. With forecasts calling for more wind this weekend, officials didn’t expect to get lucky twice and braced for a busy few days. They were pleasantly surprised by yet another reprieve.
“That’s twice now and that’s good,” Palmer said.
