Soon it will be graduation day, and we at the Family Resource Center & Readiness To Learn Foundation would like to congratulate each and every student and high school graduate for a job well done, and wish them success in the future.
Many thanks
Thank you to the community response to the tragic house fire that took place May 10 at the Johnson/Russell home. Financial donations are being collected at any Whidbey Island Bank branch and also in the Family Resource Center. There is not a list of specific needs at this time, but call the center to offer items and be added to the donation list. The resource center is located in the light green portable on the South Whidbey Academy campus, located at the former South Whidbey Primary School campus, next to the kindergarten playground. Call 360-221-0484 for more information.
Positive discipline class
The center’s spring series of positive discipline classes have come to an end. Organizers with the FRC thank the parents who participated in this opportunity to meet other parents, hone their parenting skills and make new friends. They also thank facilitators Lauri Johnson and Kathy Hein for their expertise and enthusiasm.
RAPP – Relatives as Parents Program
More and more grandparents and even aunts, uncles and older siblings, find themselves parenting or parenting a second time. This is one of the fastest growing caregiving populations, one that needs and deserves support and resources. Come to the FRC’s monthly RAPP meetings from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the second Wednesday of each month. Meet and share with other parents while enjoying coffee and a light breakfast. For more information, call Lauri Johnson at 360-221-6808 ext. 4322.
Single Mom’s Group
Sometimes it’s great to just have a casual night with other moms like yourself who parent alone, or feel like you do. The FRC provides a safe environment for single moms to share their thoughts, joys and challenges in a confidential space. Dinner and childcare are provided. Join the group on the third Thursdays of each month from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the light green portable on the South Whidbey Academy campus. Call Lauri Johnson for more information or to RSVP for childcare, 360-221-6808 ext. 4322.
Parents of Children with Special Needs
All parents and caregivers of children with special needs, of any age, are welcome to join this monthly support group. Lend support or get support, and relax with other parents who understand the challenges of raising a child with special needs. Meetings take place in the Family Resource Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the second Friday of each month. Childcare is provided upon advance request. Call the Family Resource Center at 360-221-0484 to RSVP and for more information.
Signage needed
It has come to the FRC’s attention, often in fact, that the resource center is difficult to find. Though it is in plain view on the South Whidbey Academy campus next to the kindergarten playground, it is one of several portables in back. Leaders with the FRC are asking for anyone who is handy at making signs and would like to volunteer their expertise, call them at 360-221-0484.
