South Whidbey violinist Tera Applegate participated in the Port Gardner Bay Chamber Orchestra Snohomish County Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition on Saturday, Oct. 25, where she received honorable mention for her performance of the Bach A minor concerto #1, third movement.

Adjudicator Craig Sheppard, piano professor at the University of Washington, was impressed with the 10-year-old Applegate’s performance.

“This is a difficult piece and you did a very nice job,” he told the violinist.

Last spring, Applegate won a similar competition on South Whidbey as a finalist at the Saratoga Chamber Orchestra Solo Competition.

“I was really busy the last two months getting ready for violin and gymnastics competitions that were both on the same weekend,” the young artist said.

Applegate credits her teacher, Amy Gudorf of Everett, for setting a high goal for her with this challenging piece. She also had a lot of coaching from her accompanist Kathy Fox and from violinist Talia Marcus, both of South Whidbey.

Two days before the competition, Applegate received some last-minute coaching from Fred Chu, the concertmaster of the Everett Symphony.

Winners of the Snohomish County Music Teachers Associaton competition will perform a solo with the Port Gardner Bay Chamber Orchestra next January.
