The rain didn’t stop giant pumpkin growers from competing in the Whidbey Island Giant Pumpkin Contest on Oct. 10.
The pumpkins and zucchini were weighed during an onslaught of rain, but the hardy souls stood by until the winners were announced.
The Junior Division of the contest was won by Kohl Baker of Freeland for the second consecutive year. He set a new personal record of a 287-pound pumpkin.
The biggest zucchini was a 21 pound, 12 ounce behemoth grown by John Burks of Coupeville. Second place went to Peter Case-Smith of Oak Harbor with a 16-pound, 9-ounce zucchini. Ramona Deighton of Oak Harbor took third place with her 12-pound, 15-ounce zucchini.
Winning the Giant Pumpkin contest was Lee Roof of Coupeville’s 976-pound pumpkin, which was grown at a property near Oak Harbor. Neal Amtmann of Coupeville took second place with a 486-pound entry. Mike Radach of Oak Harbor was awarded third place with a 297-pound pumpkin.
Plans are already under way for a 21st annual contest next fall. Anyone desiring free giant pumpkin seeds should send a request to whidbeypumpkins@gmail.com
