Whidbey Island has earned honors as a place to kick up your heels when your working days are done, the staff of a national magazine announced Tuesday.

In the July/August issue of “Where to Retire” magazine, Whidbey is among eight West Coast destinations as a great place to kick back after working a full life.

The magazine noted Whidbey’s great beaches and other amenities.

“The island is a quiet retreat north of Seattle with beautiful beaches, outdoor concerts, festivals, markets and necessary services,” said Mary Lu Abbott, the magazine’s editor.

Other hot spots along or near the coast include the San Juan Islands and Sequim in Washington; Portland, Eugene and Medford in Oregon; and Petaluma and San Juan Capistrano in California.

The magazine, which estimates that roughly 700,000 Americans move to a new town after retirement every year, has an average readership of 500,000.
