Deputies are asking the public for help locating a man wanted on an arrest warrant who was seen in the Greenbank area armed with a gun and wearing a bullet proof vest Feb. 5, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, 22-year-old Adam J. Belanger, was walking in the area of Witte Way around 10 a.m. and stopped in a driveway, where he was contacted by homeowners. Belanger lifted his shirt to expose a “tactical style vest” and a handgun on his right hip, the sheriff’s office reported.
Belanger eventually walked away from the residence, but the homeowners heard a gun being fired out of their sight.
Belanger, an Oak Harbor resident, isn’t eligible to possess a firearm due to a prior conviction, the sheriff’s office reported.
Deputies responded to the scene but could not locate Belanger, who was last seen walking toward Highway 525.
Prosecutors charged Belanger in Island County Superior Court Nov. 18 with residential burglary, malicious mischief in the second degree and theft in the third degree. A judge in Island County Superior Court issued a $25,000 warrant for Belanger’s arrest the same day.
Belanger was also charged in district court with reckless driving and resisting arrest. He’s wanted on a $5,000 warrant in that case, court files state.
According to court documents, Belanger and another man burglarized a Coupeville home, stealing a pinball gun and destroying $3,200 in electronics on Sept. 11.
Police had probable cause to arrest Belanger and located him in a parked car at a 7-Eleven store at the south end of Oak Harbor on Sept. 17. Officers on either side of the car told him he was under arrest and to exit the vehicle, but he drove over a sidewalk and out of sight, the police report states.
Anyone with information regarding Belanger’s whereabouts can call ICOM Dispatch at 360-679-9567 or email the sheriff’s office at tips@islandcountywa.gov.
