Whidbey woman allegedly lived in stolen car

A Coupeville woman who had been living in a stolen car is facing a felony charge.

A 30-year-old Coupeville woman who had been living in a stolen car while she was pregnant is facing a felony charge, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Kaitlyn Koepke in Island County Superior Court Sept. 26 with possession of a stolen vehicle. If convicted of the charge, she could face three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.

On April 28, an Oak Harbor resident asked Oak Harbor police to do a welfare check on a woman who seemed unresponsive inside a red Ford hatchback with no plates. Police arrived to find the vehicle unoccupied.

An officer ran the VIN number of the car and discovered that it had been stolen along with $5,000 worth of jewelry during a burglary of an Anacortes residence. The homeowner was more than 90 years old and had moved to a care home.

While the police were investigating, Koepke walked up and told police that she had purchased the car from a woman she knows. She told the police that she was homeless and hadn’t had a chance to register the vehicle, the report states.

An officer wrote that police did not take Koepke into custody because of her pregnancy; she said she was hoping to stay at the Anacortes Family Center, the report states.
