With two big wins last week, the Falcon baseball team put itself in an unusual position half way through the season: second place in the North Cascades Conference.
Going into their final seven regular-season games, the Falcons seemed to be stumbling toward the middle of the NCC pack Feb. 12 when they lost to Lynden Christian 10-6. But two days later, they came back to bomb the Lyncs pitching staff 15-4, then, last Friday, took down 5-6 Blaine by a 3-2 score to move to 6-3 just behind NCC-leading Lakewood, which is at 8-1. The Falcons have won four of their last five games.
The game of the week was undoubtedly against the Lyncs, a team that has lost few games to South Whidbey over the years. The contest turned out to be a shakedown for the Lyncs, as Falcon batters banged 15 hits off four Lynden Christian pitchers in a five-inning game. At the same time, South Whidbey ace Stephan Kolbo earned a complete-game victory, giving up eight hits on his way to a 3-1 season record.
On offense, the Falcons put the game away early, scoring six in the second inning.
For the game, senior Conley White led the team, going 4-for-4 with five RBI and a two-run homer. The home run shot was his first as a Falcon.
Dane Guetlin was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI and three runs scored. Danny Parra was 2 -for-2 with RBI and three runs scored.
On Friday, South Whidbey took a pitchers dual against Blaine 3-2 courtesy of a two-hitter by sophomore hurler Logan Hanna.
On offense, the Falcons scored two in the third on two a RBI Hanna double, and Joey Smith run off smart baserunning and a Danny Parra double.
