A Freeland woman was seriously injured in a vehicular collision Friday afternoon on the highway.
Maria Kelly, 85, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the incident. On Monday night, a spokesperson from the hospital reported that her condition was serious.
Around 1:08 p.m. on Nov. 8, Kelly was driving a Toyota Camry east on Bush Point Road when she attempted to cross Highway 525 and was struck by another car, according to a memo from the Washington State Patrol. Constance J. Starks, a 37-year-old from Lynnwood, was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe south down the highway. Neither Starks nor her teenage passenger suffered any injuries, according to the State Patrol’s report.
Kelly’s vehicle ended up on the embankment and Starks’ came to a rest blocking the southbound lane of the highway, which was closed while first responders worked to extricate Kelly from her car.
The cause of the accident is cited as failure to yield right-of-way, according to the State Patrol memo. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The South Whidbey intersection has been the site of many past car accidents, including the death of Clinton 17-year-old Taylor Daniels in 2020.
