A woman who drove her SUV off Bayview Road and injured her young daughter is under criminal investigation by the Island County Sheriff’s Office, a spokesman said Friday afternoon.

The wreck occurred Wednesday afternoon, when the driver, who the sheriff’s office decline to identify, veered off the road and down a wooded hill near a homeowner’s property.

The Ford Expedition crashed into multiple trees during the 15-foot drop. Trees prevented the vehicle from landing in the property owner’s backyard.

The young girl sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center. According to Detective Ed Wallace, the girl’s injuries “were much more substantial than thought at the scene,” and she was transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The driver didn’t sustain any injuries and was able to self-extricate from the vehicle, said South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Mike Cotton.

The incident occurred at around 3:45 p.m.

Though responders didn’t have to use any extrication equipment to pull the passengers out of the vehicle, Cotton said the car’s damage was irreparable.

“There was damage to the front, left and right of the car,” Cotton said. “It is most certainly totaled.”

Wallace said the woman may face charges of child endangerment, negligent driving or vehicular assault.
