It may be pretty tough to get a leg up on Whidbey’s newest mayor. After all, he has four.
After several recounts, Big Brothers Big Sisters officials announced the results of this year’s “Mayor of Whidbey” contest.
Ziggy Jones, a lovable corgi from Oak Harbor, won the honorary title by pulling in a whopping 435 votes in the election.
The race for Mayor of Whidbey is one way Big Brothers Big Sisters raises money for children in the community.
A total of 1,448 votes were cast, 30 percent of which went to the popular Ziggy. First runner-up was Brett Boon the collie, who finished with 19 percent of the vote.
The money the candidates raised will be used to match more children with mentors in the community.
“We are very excited to welcome this group to their elected offices and we are delighted to have so many wonderful four- and two-legged ambassadors in our community now,” said Peggy Dyer, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Organizers of the annual fundraiser said the first order of business for Whidbey’s new top dog was to announce his cabinet of advisors; Brett Boon was named Attorney General, Pepsi Sipes is Canine Commissioner, Koa is Deputy Dog, Cujo (aka Raspittin) was named Secretary of Agriculture, Brutus the dog is the Bark Ranger, Biscuit the dog is now the Barker of the House, Kasey the dog is Secretary of Steak and Murdock the peacock and Sadie Mae are the Judges of Good Character.
The nonprofit thanks the candidates and all those who donated to the cause.
The next big fundraising event on the BBBS calendar is the Festival of Trees on Dec. 2 and 3. To learn more about that event and Big Brothers Big Sisters, visit www.bbbsislandcounty.org or call 221-6808, ext. 5417 for South Whidbey, or 360-279-0644 for central and north Whidbey.
