Barbara Diana Sand, age 78, born in Seattle on Nov. 1, 1928, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Aug. 24, 2007 at her home in Edmonds.
She and her husband, both University of Washington graduates, resided together in Shoreline for 24 years where they had three children.
After 44 years in Shoreline, she moved to Edmonds where she lived for the past eight years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter Heidi (1954) and her husband, Edward Sand (1981). She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Sand (Jeff Holtby) of Whidbey Island; and son, Chris Sand (Jane Dunkel) of Bainbridge Island; as well as her four grandchildren, Ryan and Amanda Holtby and Rita and Avery Sand.
Barbara, affectionately dubbed “Babzilla,” “Boss,” “BoBo,” and “Babycakes,” was known and loved for her generosity, social activism, avid reading, library building, daunting workout schedule and fine sense of humor. She was a founding member of the Shoreline Unitarian Church and the administrative assistant at Edmonds Unitarian Church for 19 years, up until the day of her death.
Barbara will be sorely missed by her family, friends and community.
A memorial service and reception will be held at Shoreline Unitarian Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
Remembrances may be made to People for Puget Sound, The Shoreline Unitarian Church, Children’s Hospital or any of the other numerous worthy organizations she has supported regularly over the years.
