Carl Otho Richart died of cancer Nov. 10, 2003.

He was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Hood River, Ore., to Dorr J. and Mary Ella Walker Richart.

His family and friends remember him as an inspiring teacher, a storyteller, an avid sailor, a skilled woodworker and a poet.

He enjoyed anything to do with boats — building them, sailing, rowing, building models and reading maritime history. He was a natural leader with the ability to hear diverse opinions and synthesize a common goal.

He is survived by Frances, his wife of 52 years; six children, Kathleen Pryde, Mary Parker, Robert, Kevin, Ann Crook and Sara Wees; and 11 grandchildren.
